Stroll along the streets of Pelourinho, declared a world heritage site hosting the finest 17th-18th century colonial buildings in Latin America and once the governmental centre when the city was capital of Brazil. Visit the Sao Francisco church with beautiful gold-covered wood carvings in its interior. Be sure not to miss churches and cathedrals such as Igreja do Senhor do Bonfim and Cathedral on Terreiro de Jesus. Take the dramatic free-standing elevator to upper town linking Praca Cairu in the harbour area to Praca Tome de Souza in the historic old town which has become a landmark in Salvador. Step out of the lift and see Palácio Rio Branco, one of Brazil's most historic palaces. Take the short trip out to the lighthouse of Farol Da Barra which includes a museum and overlooks All Saints Bay. Enjoy a day on the beach at Praia do Porto da Barra which is undoubtedly a favourite amongst locals and tourists, or if you prefer to shop then visit the commercial area of Lapa where you will find several shopping malls.
