Vanessa's Trip to Malaysia
By Vanessa Holohan
I flew from Dublin to Heathrow and then from there to Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian Airlines. The flight time was about 13 hours. I then had a connecting flight also with Malaysian Airlines to Sandakan in Borneo, with a flight time of around 3 hours. I spent 2 nights there, before flying to Kota Kinabalu on a subsidiary of Malaysian Airlines called Malaysian Wings. After a further 3 nights there, I flew back to Kuala Lumpur where I spent another 2 nights before flying back to Heathrow and then back home to Dublin.
Malaysia is a South East Asian country, occupying parts of the Malay peninsula and the island of Borneo. It is known for its rainforests and beaches. The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is home to iconic Petronas Towers. It takes approximately 1-2 hours to get from Kuala Lumpur airport to the city depending on traffic.
What I Loved
I enjoyed trekking in the rainforest at 5am to see the amazing sunrise, seeing endangered orangutans in their natural habitat and the beautiful Kota Kinabalu beaches.
Activities & Places to See
- The Sepilok Orangutan Center in Borneo.
- The Kinabatangan River Cruise.
- The magnificent Batu Caves.
- The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
- The Sun Bear and Rainforest Discovery Center.
- The watersport activities, including stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkeling.
There are a number of great shopping centers in Kuala Lumpur, all offering the best designer brands. You can tap your card in most of the retail outlets making shopping an easy & straightforward experience.
Food & Bars
I stayed in Shangri La properties in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur and also ate at these properties. There is a wide selection of Asian restaurants in both cities, so there is plenty of choice when it comes to places to eat. As Malaysia is predominantly a Muslim Country there are very few bars and if so they are not open until 5pm.
